It's been a month since the INDEX went live, and Blake's holding up swimmingly. They've rebuilt the testing rig, to make it more ergonomic. Must admit, I'm pleased about that – wasn't exactly the most comfortable piece of kit to begin with.
Eventually, Blake's predictive algorithms should cut down on the legwork, but they're still going to need experienced miners. You can't just throw people in, y'know. I was checking on the feed of one of the kids the other day – it was his birthday, and [EXPLETIVE DELETED] me if it didn't seem like I was actually there. Of course, we don't have the bandwidth for total immersion, regardless of what the PR folks say, so Blake filled in the gaps and it was pretty much seamless.
They're going to have to totally rewrite the Data Protection Act when this goes public. Assuming it goes public, and isn't quietly ignored by the Government. Still, the bandwidth Blake's going to require means that this country is going to have the best wifi in the world, out of sheer necessity! If there's some approved MMO's out there, Brits will be laughing.
Still not sure how they're going to keep the INDEX updated – we're a tiny department, and when this goes countrywide, there's no way in [EXPLETIVE DELETED] that we'll be able to cope. I mean it's an MOD project, but there's no way it'll stay that way. If it gets approval then we're going to be training up a whole bunch of new people.
Frantzen says Pharmacology are going to be in a sticky situation – half the substances they're using aren't strictly legal, but they have research dispensation. He was muttering about synthetics and licensing issues down the pub last night. I told him, it'd be sorted. The Mandarins love Warburg right now. Sure Heart's the next big thing, or so rumour goes.
Don't get me wrong, it does what it says on the tin, but there's those little wobbles to factor in, and I hope to hell we're not missing something fundamental. The last six or seven runs, it feels like there's something...moving.
In a way I'm glad Blake's ubicomp and cloudbased – there's some ugly [EXPLETIVE DELETED] down there. You can't exactly legislate against hate or rage, though no-doubt they'll try, the way they were so fond of ASBOs when I was growing up. If anybody tried to take the programme down, there's no central site or thing to blow up. I know the firewalls are top of the line, and Blake's evolving fast enough that I think hackers will have some issues. We'll see how that goes, I suppose.
There's a whole load of political stuff going on at the moment, undercurrents in the news reports about folks pushing for more devolution. There's a shape there, hidden under the noise and the rhetoric. I'm not even sure they're aware of it. I don't know if it's the mining or what, but it's like I can taste something on the back of my tongue.
Frantzen said it was the Zeitgeist - I had to look that up. [LAUGHTER]
But if you look into the data, you start to see some interesting correlations and patterns, and by interesting, I mean like...Interesting Times level, like the Chinese curse. There's a storm brewing, deep below the conscious level. It might be time to batten down the hatches.
