Kecak: Balinese Monkey Chant

 

The kecak dance is a Balinese musical drama and religious ceremony performed for several hours on successive nights, for up to three to four months, to exorcise evil during times of peril and pestilence. It depicts the battle in the Ramayana in which the monkey-like Vanara Lord Hanuman helps Prince Rama in his fight against the evil King Ravana. The gamelan orchestra that accompanies most Balinese dance performances is replaced by the sounds of a male chorus similar to the rhythms of the gamelan featuring a synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking. The men sway their bodies and wave their hands; throwing up their arms, falling back against one another in unison, while several characters appear and dance among them. A kecak chant can be heard in Fellini's classic 1969 film Satyricon.

the artists+repertoire weekender

 

artists+repertoire is a new collaborative venture by Richard Gallon and Adrian Giddings. 

To celebrate its launch, this coming Sunday they’re helping to raise money for the ongoing relief effort in Japan.

artists+repertoire will be supporting the Mill Co. Project’s ‘Art for Japan’ fund-raising event at Lime Wharf, Vyner Street, London, in aid of the Red Cross Japan Appeal. They will be showcasing conceptual works from the Cunabula Press and Personal Soundtracks portfolios.

Prior to that, on Saturday they continue their eight-week residency at Designers / Makers, the hidden gem of Hackney’s vibrant art scene. The art/design/craft market is nestled behind The London Fields pub on Warburton Road, a mere stone’s throw from Broadway Market. They’ll be showing and selling their growing range of artists’ books, prints, posters and more.

This installation is an investigation into the interactive potential of electromagnetic fields. Theremins - musical instruments played by placing one's body within the electric field surrounding an antenna -are used here to create a week long indeterminate sound recording. Three theremins are placed in an equilateral triangle inscribed in a circular drum. The tones emitted by the theremins are determined by the presence of visitors in the space, changes in electromagnetic activity, and other environmental factors such as temperature. Without human interaction the tones of each instrument drift slowly, sympathetically. The three theremins, initially tuned to the same note, will configure themselves into various consonances and dissonances throughout the run of the exhibition.

 

 

I conceived of an instrument that would create sound without using any mechanical energy, like the conductor of an orchestra. The orchestra plays mechanically, using mechanical energy; the conductor just moves his hands, and his movements have an effect on the music artistry.
