Emma Tompkins is a Theatre Design graduate from the Nottingham Trent
University. Her previous work has included touring a co-devised piece to an
international Theatre Festival and assisting on a fringe first award winning
show as part of the 2009 Edinburgh Festival. Her work centres largely around
immersive theatrical experiences, working especially with how interactive
design can lead to audience exploration and participation. Her fascinations
with how people interact in a performance setting without the comfort of the
proscenium arch lead her to Foolish People;
'Tackling the abattoir again has been a unique challenge; such a distinctive and vast setting required a great deal of forethought to avoid repetition and disconnection from the live work and the space. The design grew very organically from the script, and shared equal developments and alterations.
It is nigh on impossible to separate the two in the sense of Club Aethereus's concept. The investigative interaction in particular is testament to the conceptual boundaries between immersive performance and immersive design, and was an aspect the design team gratefully involved within the performance. With the abattoir, logistics become potential, restrictions become challenges and character becomes atmosphere that heightens careful design.'
